Job Summary
The Patient Care Technician (PCT) provides basic nursing care and performs advanced technical skills for designated patient populations within a specialty step-down unit focused on gastrointestinal and pulmonary care. This role supports comprehensive monitoring and interventions that bridge the gap between intensive care and acute medical-surgical nursing.
The PCT assists patients with activities of daily living, monitors and reports patient observations, and contributes to patient flow, safety, and quality improvement initiatives. The position may include one-on-one care for patients on safety or suicide precautions.
Key Responsibilities
Provide basic nursing care, including monitoring blood pressure, oxygen levels, and temperature
Assist patients with bathing, meals, toileting, ambulation, and other daily living activities
Provide one-on-one observation for patients requiring safety precautions (as appropriate)
Accurately document and report patient observations to licensed nursing staff
Transport patients, supplies, specimens, and equipment within the facility
Assist with patient admissions, transfers, and discharges to ensure a positive patient experience
Support unit scheduling needs, including coverage for breaks
Review medical records for outstanding orders and notify nurses of urgent updates
Maintain and stock supplies and equipment; process and clean equipment between patients
Participate in unit quality improvement and shared governance activities
Monitor waiting and break areas for cleanliness and safety
Assist with regulatory compliance tasks (equipment checks, storage, safety rounds, etc.)
Perform additional clinical tasks as competency allows (e.g., phlebotomy, wound care, saline lock management, colostomy care)
Provide excellent customer service to patients, visitors, and healthcare professionals
Requirements
Qualifications
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent required
Experience:
Previous direct patient care experience preferred
Licensure/Certification:
Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) preferred; may be required based on facility
AHA BLS-HCP certification required within six months of hire
Other Minimum Qualifications:
Strong interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills
Ability to successfully complete required orientation and competency validation
Ability to attend mandatory daytime orientation during the initial training period
